Autism
Autism is a spectrum condition and affects young people in different ways. Like all people, people with autism have their own strengths and challenges. Some of the strengths could be ability to focus on subjects that they are interested in, finding joy in the simple things in life which others may miss. Some challenges may be restrictive repetitive behaviours, hypersensitivity, anxiety and social communication challenges.
Young people with autism, like everyone, need to feel connected, seen, heard and respected. We find a way to connect through getting to know the individual. This is absolutely necessary to build trust. Movement sessions can help take the pressure and expectations away from the child so they know that they are absolutely safe. They have to feel that we are not trying to force them into being or behaving in any way, we are simply sharing tools and techniques that might make them feel better. But most importantly it is their choice as to what tools they take into their everyday life.
