PMLD & Cerebral Palsy
Individuals with PMLD (post and moderate learning difficulties) and Cerebral Palsy may have some challenges with their mobility and movement, muscle tone, gross and fine motor skills, speech and language, learning and cognitive skills, hearing and vision, epilepsy, emotional and behavioural and joint and spinal challenges.
We find that these children are incredibly motivated and determined and we shouldn’t underestimate their potential.
Movement practices can help by increasing flexibility, range of motion in joints, and overall mobility. Mobilising the spine helps with alignment, giving the young person some relief from muscle tension. Strengthening muscles in a way that is gentle, and most importantly can be adapted for every body. We work with the body and never force, we build the relationship with the child first and develop a way of communicating to ensure we are getting consent from the young person. We give them control over their movement and guide them into finding ways to find some relief, freedom and most importantly, joy in their movement. Breathing, relaxation and mindfulness techniques can allow for relaxation throughout the entire body, increasing self-esteem and overall well being.
Every child is unique. We’d love to hear your experience so far and see how we can help.
