PTSD & Trauma
Trauma may result from a one off overwhelming event or a sustained period of time. It can be violent and physical or psychologically difficult and emotional. The result of this may be sudden or very gradual; not noticing the effects months of years later. Recent research has proven that we hold trauma in the body.
Young people, who have experienced trauma, are on high alert and find it difficult to turn this alarm system off. We use a very gentle approach where the young person is completely in control of what they want to do. The most important aspect of this work is our relationship with the young person, creating a safe therapeutic space. From here, we can begin to offer carefully selected movement, breathing, and mindfulness practices which might help to soothe the young person, This approach is always invitaional and an exploration of what may work for them to find inner calm and well being. This gentle approach can guide the child to find a way to connect with their body and emotions in order to feel more comfortable in their experience.
